Google Analytics module

For some years now we've been installing the handy Google Analytics Dashboard module, which displays key GA statistics in your website's control panel. This module has not been updated by the developer for almost eighteen months now, and has failed on some sites. The developer is not responding to support requests, so where it's stopped working we'll uninstall the module until an update is available.

If you have a Google account and would like to access your site's full stats on the Google Analytics website, please send us the email address associated with your account for an invitation to join (free of charge).

Security certificates and visitor panic

We emailed all Zipfish customers back in February with the news that Google Chrome had begun to mark all sites without a security certificate as 'not secure', and we've since installed certificates for many clients. Now the Mozilla Firefox browser has followed suit and is alerting users to unsecured sites, and Google has announced that the information symbol it currently uses to mark such sites will be replaced in due course with a red warning triangle, indicating danger.

This is a particular problem for sites where users are required to log in or enter details - for instance, sites with online shops - but all sites are affected, and the obvious danger is that visitors will panic and leave as soon as they see the warning. The cost of installing a free Let's Encrypt security certificate, site configuration and testing is £30. If your site doesn't have a certificate already and you'd like one installed, please get in touch.

NEW backup service

We take a backup of each Zipfish site at the point it first goes live and occasionally thereafter, but if your site were to be attacked by hackers or succumb to a software or hardware failure, we could restore it only to the date of the most recent backup and many months or even years of updates could be lost. Some sites change very little over time, but any site with changing content, and particularly any featuring a shop or blog, is vulnerable to data loss in this way.

To counter this danger, we're introducing a new, low-cost backup service, available on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule.

The site and its database are backed up into a single file and saved to the Zipfish Dropbox account, *where you can access and download it if required for an extra layer of protection (please note that your Dropbox account must have sufficient space to accommodate the files). The backup can quickly be restored to a new MySQL database on any suitable server.
